The Beatles Profile Playlist

Personal Note on The Beatles:

I first listened to the Beatles, not on radio, LP or cassette but through syndicated reruns of Beatles cartoons that were shown in the mornings of the early 1980s on WSNS Channel 44 (Chicago). I was 8 or 9 years-old and don’t remember what all those cartoons were about but I remembered the music.

From that point onward, I would hear some of their music on the radio, “Yesterday”, “Long and Winding Road” and a few others. There wasn’t a lot of airplay for their music back then. A 9-year-old kid listening to the Beatles wasn’t exactly the “cool” thing to be doing. It was the early 80s with post-punk music and artists like The Police, Blondie, Michael Jackson and others dominating the radio, I would listen to those popular artists but also sought out other music. I remember hearing Paul McCartney, John Lennon and George Harrison songs on the radio but they were, though very good, their solo work and also very modern. The thing that made a huge difference was that The Beatles music was from the 60s. Older music, at that time, was new to me. Except for some Motown hits I heard from that era, I wasn’t familiar with all the songs released back then. But the Beatles music was a doorway to the sounds of Rock n Roll, The 60s and eventually Classic Rock.

It wasn’t until November 19, 1995 that I would understand fully the scope of their importance and influence. It was on that day, ABC television network broadcast the first episode of Beatles Anthology documentary. Over the next 2 nights I was taken back in time and heard songs that were new to me. I was now a complete and total Beatles fan. I would soon purchase the companion music to the Beatles Anthology series on CD as well as their Beatles 1962-1966 and 1967-1970 to have key songs from their body of work.

I would eventually have all their albums in the years that followed on CD and Mp3 formats.

Over the years, The Beatles music has aged very well. The music is a time capsule of hopes and dreams, love and visions. Now there are Beatle fans young and old. Today, a 9 year-old kid is not considered weird or strange listening to them. And that makes me long for the days when their music were brand new to me again….

A few more thoughts:

It’s the Beatles and their music that caused me to create my own personal “Three Point Rule” for greatest artists: Popularity (How many sales? How many hits?), Innovation (Was there anything new created?) and Influence (How many other artists were influenced?). The Beatles fulfilled all these and more…..

The photo on the left from The Beatles 1 Album features them in different scenes and colors. I have always commented on those images as a way to explain their personalities and the music they created, some of the many factors that make music great: John (Imagination) – Paul (Love) – George (Spirituality) – Ringo (Humor)

======================

The Beatles were an English rock band that formed in Liverpool, in 1960. With John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, they became widely regarded as the greatest and most influential act of the rock era. Rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, the Beatles later experimented with several genres, ranging from pop ballads to psychedelic and hard rock, often incorporating classical elements in innovative ways. In the early 1960s, their enormous popularity first emerged as "Beatlemania", but as their songwriting grew in sophistication they came to be perceived as an embodiment of the ideals shared by the era's sociocultural revolutions.

Starting in 1960, the Beatles built their reputation playing clubs in Liverpool and Hamburg over a three-year period. Manager Brian Epstein moulded them into a professional act and producer George Martin enhanced their musical potential. They gained popularity in the United Kingdom after their first hit, "Love Me Do", in late 1962. They acquired the nickname the "Fab Four" as Beatlemania grew in Britain over the following year, and by early 1964 they had become international stars, leading the "British Invasion" of the United States pop market. From 1965 on, the Beatles produced what many critics consider their finest material, including the innovative and widely influential albums Rubber Soul (1965), Revolver (1966), Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), The Beatles (White Album) (1968), and Abbey Road (1969). After their break-up in 1970, they each enjoyed successful musical careers. Lennon was shot and killed in December 1980, and Harrison died of lung cancer in November 2001.

According to the RIAA, the Beatles are the best-selling band in the United States, with 177 million certified units. They have had more number-one albums on the British charts and sold more singles in the UK than any other act. In 2008, the group topped Billboard magazine's list of the all time most successful "Hot 100" artists; as of 2014, they hold the record for most number-one hits on the Hot 100 chart with 20. They have received ten Grammy Awards, an Academy Award for Best Original Score and fifteen Ivor Novello Awards. Collectively included in Time magazine's compilation of the 20th century's 100 most influential people, they are the best-selling band in history, with estimate sales of over 600 million records worldwide. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked the Beatles as the greatest artist of all time.

Twenty years after the Beatles released their first single in the UK (Love Me Do), Capitol and Parlophone commemorated the event with the compilation called 20 Greatest Hits. Three different track lists were produced: for the UK and U.S. markets, and a third for "Europe." The reasoning was that the selection of the twenty greatest Beatles hits varied from market to market, as not all singles were released in all countries. This would be the last LP in the discography of the Beatles to have different versions for the U.S. and the UK. The release dates were October 11, 1982 in the U.S. and October 18, 1982 in Britain.

This compilation sold reasonably well, but did not pass number 50 in the U.S. or number 10 in the UK. Beatles historians took this as an indication that this British rock-band phenomenon of the 1960's had finally been supplanted by newer trend setters in popular music. They had joined the nostalgic, "Oldies" category for good.

The U.S. and European versions of the LP include a trimmed-down version of Hey, Jude (to 5:05). The version in the UK and the releases on cassette in all markets kept the original, 7:11 track. The U.S. version also was distributed in Canada, in spite of the fact that Can't Buy Me Love only went to number 3 there, and two number one hits, All My Loving and This Boy, are not on the record.

Ten of the twenty greatest hits appear on all three versions of the record. In comparison with the UK track listing, the U.S./Canada version has 14 songs in common. Six from the UK release were omitted: The Ballad of John and Yoko, Day Tripper, Don't Let Me Down, Eleanor Rigby, From Me to You, and Yellow Submarine. In their place appears: Hello--Goodbye, I Feel Fine, Ticket to Ride, Penny Lane, Come Together and Get Back. The European track list has 15 tracks in common with the UK version, and omits the following six: Don't Let Me Down, Eight Days a Week, Let It Be, The Long and Winding Road and Yesterday. In their place the European LP inserted: Get Back, Hello--Goodbye, I Feel Fine, Lady Madonna, and Ticket to Ride.

Playlist 2013 - Favorite Songs of The Year

I continued my musical journey in 2013 with more discoveries online by way of Spotify, Pandora, YouTube and other networks. Again, I say, welcome to the future…

From Pop Hits to Indie Dance to Rock...and Everything Else, it was quite a busy year for music, as always and everyone knows my taste varies. I expanded my Spotify playlists to include more Indie Dance, Electronica, Sounds of both Brazil and Ibiza, Classic Rock (Thanks to the music of Pink Floyd, The Eagles and Led Zeppelin added to Spotify) and Classic Jazz; Discovering and listening to artists like Kavinsky, The Civil Wars, Tame Impala, Alice Smith, The Editors, Cut Copy, Chromeo and The Weeknd for the first time.

Familiar favorites were in rotation as well including Daft Punk, Kings of Leon, New Order, The Smiths, Jamiroquai, Eddie Kendricks, The Cure and Chet Baker.

The best television performance of the year, in my opinion, would go to Alice Smith’s “Fool for You” performed on BET’s Black Girls Rock 2013.

The one music collection, I discovered, that rose above all others would go to the Tammi Terrell – Come on and See Me: The Complete Solo Collection and her version of Stevie Wonder’s “All I Do Is Think About You” (Previously Unreleased) Though released in 2010, this collection is as definitive as it gets for a talent our world lost so young. I discovered it after adding the Motown Complete Singles Collection 1959-1970s on my Spotify Playlists in July. Both are great collections every music fan should add.

And the song with the best video-song combination with a deep meaning goes to Basement Jaxx and their song, “What A Difference Your Love Makes” So, here again, listed alphabetically, are some of those songs and artists I discovered, enjoyed and had made the rotation on my playlists in 2013:

The Delfonics – Profile Playlist

The Delfonics are a pioneering Philadelphia soul singing group, popular in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Their most notable hits include "La-La (Means I Love You)", "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)", "Break Your Promise", "I'm Sorry", and "Ready or Not Here I Come (Can't Hide from Love)". Their hit songs were all written by songwriter and producer Thom Bell and lead vocalist and founder William Hart.

Their songs have been used extensively in film soundtracks, including Quentin Tarantino's 1997 movie Jackie Brown, in which "La-La (Means I Love You)" and "Didn't I Blow Your Mind" underscore the pivotal relationship between the characters played by Pam Grier and Robert Forster.

Their songs have been sampled extensively by various hip-hop and rap artists including: The Wu-Tang Clan, Fugees, Deltron 3030, The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Boyz II Men, Missy Elliott and DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince.

In addition, their songs have been covered by numerous other performers, including Aretha Franklin, The Jackson 5, Patti LaBelle, New Kids on the Block, Fugees, Todd Rundgren, Prince, Swing Out Sister and The Manhattan Transfer.

Original group members were William and Wilbert Hart, Ritchie Daniels, and Randy Cain, whom they met at Overbrook High School in the 1960s. Their first recording, "He Don't Really Love You", was for Moon Shot in 1966. Daniels was drafted and left for the service in 1968. At Cameo, producer Stan Watson introduced them to producer Thom Bell, then working with Chubby Checker. With Cameo they recorded a popular tune called "You've Been Untrue". The group's first album, released on Watson's own Philly Groove record label, featured the smash hit "La-La (Means I Love You)" in 1968. The single sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. Four more Bell-produced albums appeared in the next few years: The Sound of Sexy Soul, The Delfonics Super Hits, The Delfonics and Tell Me This Is a Dream. Among the Delfonics' popular hits were the Grammy-winning "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)", "(For The Love) I Gave To You", "Ready or Not Here I Come (Can't Hide from Love)", and "Hey Love". Prior to the release of "La-La (Means I Love You)", they had a hit with "He Don't Really Love You" on the small Moonshot record label in 1966. The Delfonics and Bell had to work with a basic budget on the first creation as Thom explained "When I took them into the studio we didn't have any money to pay for string players and an orchestra so I played most of the instruments myself!" - a far cry from the full classical productions from 1968 to the beginning of the seventies. "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)" also sold a million copies and by March 1970 received a gold disc from the R.I.A.A..

Randy Cain left the group in 1971, and in 1973 had a hand in formulating Blue Magic, best known for their classic "Sideshow," when he brought singer-songwriter Ted Mills in to do some writing for W.M.O.T. (We Men Of Talent), and the remaining future members of Blue Magic came in for an audition. Cain was replaced by Major Harris; by then, however, Thom Bell had moved on to produce The Stylistics and later, The Spinners, all artists in the mold of the Delfonics. The Delfonics swiftly produced another album, Alive & Kicking, produced by Stan Watson. However, in the absence of Thom Bell, the Delfonics' career declined sharply, and with the exception of the aforementioned "Hey Love" and the minor hits "When You Get Right Down to It", "I Don't Want To Make You Wait" and "I Told You So", success eluded them after 1975. ("(For The Love) I Gave To You", although popular, was never released as a single.) Most of their songs at this point were written by lead singer William Hart.

Kings of Leon achieved initial success in the United Kingdom with nine Top 40 singles, two BRIT Awards in 2008, and all three of the band's albums at the time peaking in the top five of the UK Albums Chart. Their third album, Because of the Times, also reached the number one spot. After the release of Only by the Night in September 2008 the band achieved chart success in the United States. The singles "Sex on Fire", "Use Somebody", and "Notion" all peaked at number one on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart. Profile Playlist: Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd were an English rock band that achieved international acclaim with their progressive and psychedelic music. Distinguished by their use of philosophical lyrics, sonic experimentation, and elaborate live shows, they are one of the most commercially successful and musically influential groups in the history of popular music.

Founded in 1965, the band originally consisted of students Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright. They first gained popularity performing in London's underground music scene during the late 1960s, and under Barrett's creative leadership they released two charting singles and a successful debut album. David Gilmour joined as a fifth member in December 1967, and Barrett left the band in April 1968 due to his deteriorating mental health. After Barrett's departure, Waters became their primary songwriter and lyricist. With Waters, Mason, Wright and Gilmour, Pink Floyd achieved critical and commercial success with the concept albums The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979) and The Final Cut (1983).

Wright left Pink Floyd in 1979, followed by Waters in 1985. Gilmour and Mason continued as Pink Floyd and Wright subsequently joined them as a paid musician. They continued to record and tour through 1994; two more albums followed, A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994). Inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005, as of 2013 they have sold more than 250 million albums worldwide, including 74.5 million certified units in the United States.

After nearly two decades of acrimony, the band reunited in 2005 for a performance at the global awareness event Live 8. Barrett died in 2006 and Wright in 2008. In 2011, surviving members Gilmour and Mason joined Waters at one of his The Wall Tour shows at The O2 Arena in London.

Playlist 2012 – 10 Favorite Songs of The Year

I must admit that this year unlike any other would be the first where the majority of my favorites were listened to via online.

I remember way way back in 1999, Everything but the Girl’s “Lullaby of Clubland” was the first song I ever heard online via the RealPlayer music player. Since then, the downloads, remixes, etc. have been varied. By 2008, The 80s-influenced retro-dance group, Lemon would be the only artist I would listen to exclusively on Facebook because they did not have a CD released….In 2011, I listened to selections from Arcade Fire’s “The Suburbs” on YouTube. It was the first time I had previewed an entire album online exclusively. Normally, I would just wait until I saw a few videos, bought or borrowed a CD, etc. These times do change, eventually….

Earlier this year, I signed up on Spotify and started listening to Pandora again and set up, Live365 and TuneIn through my phone and Roku. Thanks to that decision, I discovered a host of artists I otherwise would not have listened to including Polica, Santigold, Metric, Tame Impala, Lemongrass, Rooney, Mike Snow and a great selection of music influenced by Chillout and Ibiza.

So, here are some of those songs and artists I discovered that have stood out for me and made the rotation on my playlists this past year:

Profile Playlist: New Order – 1981-2005 - 10 Songs by New Order

New Order are an English rock band formed in 1980 by Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitars, synthesisers), Peter Hook (bass, synthesisers) and Stephen Morris (drums, electronic drums, synthesisers) – the remaining members of Joy Division, following the suicide of vocalist Ian Curtis – with the addition of Gillian Gilbert (keyboards, guitars, synthesisers). In 1993 the band broke-up amidst tension between bandmembers, but reformed in 1998. In 2001, Phil Cunningham (guitars, synthesisers) replaced Gilbert, who left the group due to family commitments. In 2007, Peter Hook left the band and the band broke-up again, with Sumner saying in 2009 that he no longer wishes to make music as New Order. The band reunited in 2011 without Hook, with Gilbert returning to the fold and Tom Chapman replacing Hook on bass. During the band's career and inbetween lengthy breaks, bandmembers have immersed themselves on number of solo projects, such as Sumner's Electronic and Bad Lieutenant; Hook's Monaco and Revenge and Gilbert's and Morris' The Other Two.

By combining New Wave and electronic music, New Order became one of the most critically acclaimed and highly influential bands of the 1980s. Though the band's early years were shadowed by the legacy and basic sound of Joy Division, their immersion in the early 1980s New York City club scene increased their knowledge of dance music and enabled them to incorporate elements of that style into their work. The band's 1983 hit "Blue Monday", the best-selling 12-inch single of all time, is one example of how the band transformed their sound.

New Order were the flagship band for Factory Records. Their minimalist album sleeves and "non-image" (the band rarely gave interviews and were known for performing short concert sets with no encores) reflected the label's aesthetic of doing whatever the relevant parties wanted to do, including an aversion to including singles as album tracks. The band has often been acclaimed by fans, critics and other musicians as a highly influential force in the alternative rock, dance and rave music scenes.

Profile Playlist: Nat King Cole (1919-1965)

Nathaniel Adams Coles (March 17, 1919 – February 15, 1965), known professionally as Nat King Cole, was an American musician who first came to prominence as a leading jazz pianist. He owes most of his popular musical fame to his soft baritone voice, which he used to perform in big band and jazz genres. He was one of the first black Americans to host a television variety show, and has maintained worldwide popularity since his death.

Cole and two other musicians formed the "King Cole Swingers" in Long Beach and played in a number of local bars before getting a gig on the Long Beach Pike for US$90 ($1,507 today) per week. The trio consisted of Cole on piano, Oscar Moore on guitar, and Wesley Prince on double bass. The trio played in Failsworth throughout the late 1930s and recorded many radio transcriptions. Cole's role was that of piano player and leader of the combo.

Legend had it that Cole's singing career did not start until a drunken barroom patron demanded that he sing "Sweet Lorraine". In fact, Cole has gone on record saying that the fabricated story "sounded good, so I just let it ride." Cole frequently sang in between instrumental numbers. Noticing that people started to request more vocal numbers, he obliged. Yet the story of the insistent customer is not without some truth. There was a customer who requested a certain song one night, but it was a song that Cole did not know, so instead he sang "Sweet Lorraine". The trio was tipped 15 cents for the performance, a nickel apiece (Nat King Cole: An Intimate Biography, Maria Cole with Louie Robinson, 1971).

During World War II, Wesley Prince left the group and Cole replaced him with Johnny Miller. Miller would later be replaced by Charlie Harris in the 1950s. The King Cole Trio signed with the fledgling Capitol Records in 1943. The group had previously recorded for Excelsior Records, owned by Otis René, and had a hit with the song "I'm Lost", which René wrote, produced and distributed. Revenues from Cole's record sales fueled much of Capitol Records' success during this period. The revenue is believed to have played a significant role in financing the distinctive Capitol Records building near Hollywood and Vine in Los Angeles. Completed in 1956, it was the world's first circular office building and became known as "The House that Nat Built."
